the apostle paul hated women, too
revisiting hannibal the book has been nowhere near as pleasant as revisiting sotl, but it's making a lot of things about how they're handling the tv show (and why i don't like it) clearer. it's also making me proud of myself that, in a little over a decade, i managed to obliterate almost everything about that book (EELS? MASON'S SISTER THE LESBIAN BODY GUARD?! CATTLE PROD UP THE ASS?!) bar the pigs from my memory.
i imprinted on her and i fiercely cherish the memory of her, sure, but i didn't quite *get it* as a teenager - clarice/sotl is actually this franchise's one and only saving grace (for me, personally). none of the other main characters register much, on an emotional level, not even lecter himself. which is why i never got around to reading or watching hannibal rising - i couldn't muster the necessary amount of fucks to give.
there are chapters upon chapters dedicated to lecter's pov and his interaction with ppl and his past and what he's been doing with his freedom in hannibal and they draaaaag. the show is much better in this respect because they have mikkelsen and he's nothing if not an engrossing screen presence. but at the end of the day, the only aspect about lecter's life i care about and anticipate in any medium is clarice's entrance.
hannibal the lonely cannibal? he's gaslighting will graham??? he's brainwashing abigail??? he's fucking with crawford???
...nothing pings for me, emotionally. nada. idc.
TO SUM IT UP, the show was never for me because despite having read 3 books and watched 4 movies, i'm not a fan of the franchise, i'm a fan of one specific character and one specific relationship.
