i've literally just finished david rakoff's half-empty. first thing i've read by him.

i had planned on making grendel my next read, but decided to go with this instead and it turned out to be for the best, because here's a book that suits my mindset at this particular moment in time.

the book begins strong and i couldn't put it down up to and including his essay on the musical rent. after that, the essays seem to become less and less thematically pertinent... until the two last chapters wrap it all together and you go, "oh. i see your point. well played." especially true if you go in like i did knowing that he'd not survived the cancer.

he sounded exactly like i expected him to reading the book.

mentioning this only because i was surprised when i first saw a david sedaris interview. he sounded nothing like i expected.
