where in your job description does it say you're supposed to be happy?

c&p tl;dr oldskool l&o thoughts.

* i have no clue if it’s true what i just read about jack and claire being the only partnership in the l&o franchise to have canonical confirmation of boning (i could have sworn ppl got together in the uk version, too), but it would make sense?

mccoy would hold such a distinction.

i can't see jack mccoy getting trapped in a ust situation for years.

* TROPHY!

i used to have this love/hate relationship with trophy because while it offered super gr8 character insight, i thought it dipped more than just its toes into soap dramarama waters when up until that point the l&o writers had done SO WELL keeping the mccoy/kincaid thing elegantly understated. (gosh, so elegant.)

i love the whole premise and they’d certainly built to it. but lord, 75% of diana hawthorne’s lines used to make me press the stop button so i’d have a moment to alternatively bask AND hide my face in the couch to scream WHAT WHAT WHAT ARE YOU DOINNNGGG, WHAT IS THIS CORNY DIIIIIALOGUEEEE, WHY ARE YOU GOING FROM A WINK TO A TAAAAACKLEEEE

… in retrospect? having a lot more examples of the handling of romantic plots in procedurals to compare? yeah, no, it’s still a masterclass in subtlety. and maturity. and tastefulness.

not to mention that what *i* saw as a sledgehammer was still ambiguous enough that a lot (!!!!) of people apparently were still kept guessing wrt the nature of their relationship. so yeah, a belated tip of the hat to the trophy writers.

* Oh, so Harrigan did it because he’s a Mick? Detective Logan is a Mick. I’m a Mick, sir, and if you don’t shut up I’ll lose control and throw you out of the room!

l&o s5 was the irish season. 1 detective and 2 prosecutors of irish descent.

* feeling an extreme sense of kinship with this old judge who just wandered into mccoy’s office to ramble about how adam schiff liked his sandwich & shit. (everything after schiff's tenure is fuzzy to me too, i feel u mate.)

* arthur to jack in the 1st ep of s16: YOU'LL NEVER BE A DISTRICT ATTORNEY.

* in retrospect, i think mccoy’s rapport with his post-carmichael second chairs being generally perceived as underwhelming had more to do with the stagnation of his character than with some inscrutable chemistry element, old age or “robotic” actresses ruining everything.

jack was the closest thing to a lead the mothership had and carmichael was the last ADA to play a part in the big defining mccoy growth arc.

claire was the romantic interest that was killed off, sending jack into a downward spiral. jamie was the voice of reason that jack was too far down & past rock bottom to hear. abbie was the loyal and sprireted girl friday that supported him while he was climbing out.

after he was done with the pathos, his 2nd chairs stopped having a strong emotional relationship with him.

second chairs in the mothership were a bit like bond girls, in a way. thankless role.

* every time i catch an arthur branch episode i think of how he’s like the most perfect love child of adam schiff and abbie charmichael, but doesn’t enjoy a fraction of their popularity.

not being as funny as schiff or a PYT like charmichael really hurts the guy.

even in-universe! i mean, episodes where jack acts disgusted and offended that branch always has politics in mind are just the most hilarious thing to me, because jack had no problem whatsoever when adam (whom jack straight up reveres) did the same thing.

adam actually had more political hustle than branch, all in all. but oh well.

* domesticity meme (jack/claire):

who cooks normally? neither, they lived on take-out.
how often do they fight? often, because of work.
what do they do when they’re away from each other? running, bike.
nicknames for each other? nah.
who is more likely to pay for dinner? celebratory cases aside (“you’ll buy the whole dinner!”), they split the bill. an arrangement that i doubt extended to drinks because wow that would’ve been MEGA unfair to claire.
who steals the covers at night? jack.
what would they get each other for gifts? JEWELRY MADE OUT OF TWIGS.
who remembers things? claire. good eye for details and remembering contradictory statements seemed to be her strengths, canonically.
who cusses more? claire.
what would they do if the other one was hurt? let’s not
who kissed who first? i don’t have a fixed headcanon for this for reasons related to the next question.

who made the first move? jack for sure started the flirting, but after the conversation they had in their first meeting, i think claire just ~subtly signaling that she was game for crossing the line from fun flirting to makeouts might not have been enough? maybe she’d have to cross it first herself rather than just letting jack waltz her through (the later option being what i think would be her natural inclination). i could see it being a matter of principle and pride for him.

that said, i can also easily envision a scenario where jack doesn’t gaf about pride and totally just waltzes her through because he’s an extreme A type, take charge guy. if he sees an opening, he’ll take it.

who started the relationship? idg this one. i’m gonna say both bc it’s a typical consensual relationship involving adults.
