berlin is nothing like la

i realized a while ago that the reason my interest in star trek aos lasted only a few months and i now have no desire to see the sequel in theaters is because i'm, like... genetically incapable of having ensemble feelings, i think. (*)

enterprise family? idc.

i'll need it to leak online, then i'll be able to ffw through all the bits that don't feature chris pine's face. even tho there IS this spolery clip circulating on tumblr of kirk talking to uhura in an elevator and i watched that and still was like "... 'kay". glorious pine face & all.

maybe i'll like it more when he talks to pike. or if he talks to sulu or scotty. that would be nice.

(*) it's not just with trek, tho. i'm not into ensembles in general. i always have one or two fave characters and dgaf about the rest of the lot, usually. is this weird? possibly. idk.

"you only live by my generosity" illyana khaleesi rasputina

1. i owe my continued existence to laziness, guilt & hannibal. in that order, i think.
2. the actress who plays abigail's reading hannibal fanfiction & being hilaritized by the fact that "everyone is boning". she also has a tumblr and one of her reblogs is of a mads gifset (her commentary: "that's my boy"). i already love her dearly.
3. can i be honest? i laughed at wanda calling rogue one of magneto's floozies in today's uncanny avengers. idk, i don't really care about any of these ppl, i'm reading out of habit. and then there was thor in my home town almost knocking christ the redeemer with mjolnir. I D K. it's a very mean spirited book, but like i said: i have zero investment. not just in this title but in marvel comics as a whole even tho i'm reading around half a dozen of their ongoings out of habit. (none of them is ~hawkguy - screw you, fraction.)
4. wordplay 2013 starts with a bang! or not, idk, zach just brought out the big guns too soon. TOO SOON. (never forget: best use i've ever made of windows movie maker.)
5. i saw the host for saoirse ronan. it wasn't worth it.

angel 1.0 is so fucking dumb, i love it -

HORTICULTURE'S BIG IN OUR GROUP

i'm a bad star trek fan in that i have no interest in the original series, just abrasmverse, and in that 'verse, mostly just kirk. (like, 90% kirk. i have a fondness for scotty and spock, but jim is my ~feels anchor. i ffw through most parts that have nothing to do with him when i rewatch. so in a way, i'm not a "star trek" fan at all. just a jim pine kirk fan.)

also in that i'm not really looking forward to STXII.

i am, however, looking forward to them -

just look at them :[

digression, but i must put this in writing: this is a promise to myself - i will finish the mark of athena in the next 48 hours. I W I L L, so help me god.

i have been and always shall be

watching the star trek trailer: "... 'kay. this really was one of those quintessential flash in the pan 6 months obsession & then never again will i care things for me, wasn't it."

3 minutes later, someone on tumblr posts giacchino's enterprising young men: "**SOBBING**"

giacchino is the mvp of the rebooted star tek franchise.

that said, come back to me, jim :[

i'm sorry that it seems like you're about to lose your newly found alien buddy. :[

I didn't like Bones in ST:XI because we're supposed to take him seriously, but he was incompetent and only useful to the plot ONCE. Erase him from the movie after he gets Kirk aboard the Enterprise and nothing is lost. He does have a distinct personality (grumpy!).

I loved Darcy Lewis in Thor despite her uselessness to the plot because I think she is ESSENTIAL to the tone of the movie. Thor is a ridiculous concept for a modern-day superhero. You have to embrace the ridiculousness as much as you can, and that's why Darcy is there. (I basically agree with this review on the embracing the absurdity front.) And you can't just pass on her lines to other characters and erase her because the other characters are supposed to be taken more seriously. She's an effective, distinct comif relief. Doesn't get in the way. Is self-aware enough that she knows she doesn't have much to contribute to the solving of the Thor mystery - not the case with McCoy in ST: XI, ftr, which is why I just cannot with him.

Moira in XMFC: useful more than once, can't be erased. But I DON'T KNOW WHO SHE IS. There's nothing there enough to like or dislike. They gave the one line that would connect her to the emotional core of the movie to Oliver Platt. ("These are good, hard working people.") They failed Rose Byrne in so many ways.

Zach: It was a commitment I had to make and obviously one I was willing to…but it was not easy and it was painful and it was metic-tedious and it had to be kept up everyday and it was six months-
Chris: Stop. bitching.

I know they still keep in touch and that they met for dinner only last month or something, and I'm happy for them and shit, but I need press junkets. I NEED TO SEE THEM BEING 13 YOs.

eta:

I: The relationship between the two characters is very important…for Star Trek. Was there anything that he made you guys do? Did he give you ten bucks and tell you to go to walmart and buy something together?

C: No. it was- I think that's one of the hardest things about acting is like if you have to have a strong relationship with someone and if you don't have it, it's hard to just make that up on the spot. And thank god we just have a natural affinity for one another.

I: Did you go rock-climbing?

C: We did a lot of rock climbing. A lot of ballroom dancing-

I: Did you do that thing were you fall back…

Z: Trust falls?

C: Trust exercises? 'It's ok Zach… just fall into my arms. Good…good… no… shhhh…'

can't see shit, captain

based on what i can grasp from fanish stuff, the TOS triad of spock/kirk/mccoy was based on spock being the voice of logic and mccoy being the conscience. kirk was the decision maker, the one who reached common ground.

right. i've seen theories about uhura replacing mccoy in the triad in reboot. i have no investment in mccoy, so i'm more concerned about how this would work, logically.

- uhura is not kirk's friend, so she has little sway over the decision maker rn. not to mention that he's now officially her superior, so going against him with that power imbalance and no personal relationship would be tricky, risking on coming off like insubordination. (i didn't get any anvils about a kirk/uhura friendship developing from XI, so idk.)

- there would probs be no srs emotion/logic conflict because spock and uhura's relationship seemed heavily based on understanding and shit.

i can totally see them giving uhura a more prominent role in the next few films because she is and will likely remain the sole lady in a dick-infested dance floor.

but i don't see how this triad format would work.

DROWNING IN REGRET

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

She played here. Janelle opened for her. Reports are unanimous: it was awesome.

... I wasn't there. Because I decided it'd be irresponsible to waste money I don't have.

And maybe it's the rotten mood I'm in, and the fact that tennis and life are making me feel funny, but I've also decided I've had enough of ST fanfic/fannish things.

I have realized I don't really love Star Trek. I love (Christopher Pine's) James Tiberius Kirk's face. And I love the idea of Winona. And I love the Enterprise. And Sulu and Scotty in my head. And I love the potential Reboot Kirk and Spock have to be just ~~*LEGENDARY*~~ in an uncertain, "are we as awesome as we are supposed to be? ARE WE FAILING AT OUR DESTINY?" way. I mean - "Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material." I WOULD KILL TO HEAR REBOOT SPOCK SAY THAT, NEGL.

But that's all I love, and this fandom confuses me/makes me feel guilty. IDEK. I D E K.

... I'll never get to watch Amy and Janelle, will I?

late hours exploring star trek fandom, thing i don't understand #523409

I don't get why it's sometimes implied in fic and in discussion that McCoy and Uhura as presented in reboot stand in the way of nu!Kirk and nu!Spock evolving into a relationship similar to what they had in TOS. (Other than wishful thinking or resentment @ the changes made in XI, that is.)

From what I understand, Kirk was very close to McCoy in TOS, too. Is McCoy's relationship with Kirk and Uhura's relationship with Spock in reboot automatically and for always more significant because they've known each other for longer?

But like, didn't Kirk and Spock had other friends in TOS before they met? Were they besties since their womb days? I'm TOS ignorant, but Wikipedia tells me they were not. That they met in their early 30s. I'm going with that.

Fandom completely loses me on this, for srs. I think there's validity to the idea nu!Kirk and nu!Spock may never reach the level of closeness their Prime counterparts had. Because they're different people. But Uhura and McCoy should have zero bearing on this, at least to my mind.

I've been reading Reboot Kirk-Spock friendship fic - which, I've discovered, is my favorite kind - in my spare time. I have discerned a pattern of sorts:

(1) James trying too hard - (2) awkwardness - (3) mentions of both working together swimmingly during missions - (4) awkwardness remains when off-duty - (5) humorous passage - (6) brief ten seconds window where they "get" each other, which somehow should be taken as clear indication they'll eventually be bff/The End

I think I'd enjoy some of those fics a lot more without step 6, tho. It can feel a bit tacked on after many paragraphs on their inability to talk outside mission/crisis situations and just be at ease around each other.

The idea that they may not ever work as really close friends, even if they have all the same blocks that make their AU counterparts besties/bros/t'hy'la, is really interesting, too, if way sad. So the rushed "It'll all work out in the end, trust" ending isn't necessary.
