i think mere anarchy made me understand why i can put up with roald dahl's brand of misogyny better than i can put up with woody allen's despite the fact that the former is cruder and more vicious.
dahl was a detestable person, but reading his prose i never got the feeling he was trying to convince anyone otherwise. also, even in his stories for playboy where he just let his issues loose, he seemed to actually understand that women are people and not whimsical human-like creatures that come in three models, which is something i'm never quite sure woody allen grasps.
